Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci in Haven of Hope Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority.

     The spokesperson for Haven of Hope Hospital (HHH) made the following announcement today (October 4):
 
     Twelve female patients (aged 56 to 104 years old) in an extended care ward of HHH have been confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci since September 30. All patients were asymptomatic. Nine patients are under isolation treatment with stable condition, two patients have been discharged and the remaining patient passed away earlier due to underlying disease.
 
     The hospital infection control team has followed up with the department concerned and the Centre for Health Protection. The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward:
 
  1. Continued to apply stringent contact precautions;
  2. Enhanced environmental cleaning and disinfection; and
  3. Enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients.
 
     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
