CE congratulates Siobhan Bernadette Haughey on winning Tokyo Olympics medal for Hong Kong (with photos)

     The Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games today (July 28) brought good news to the territory again. After fencer Cheung Ka-long won a gold medal for Hong Kong earlier, Hong Kong swimming athlete Siobhan Bernadette Haughey today won the silver medal in the Women's 200m Freestyle for Hong Kong. It is the first medal in a swimming event at the Olympic Games in Hong Kong's history and the second Olympic silver medal after the one awarded at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, extended her warmest congratulations to Haughey.  

     "This is the very first time that Hong Kong has won a medal in a swimming event in the Olympic Games. Haughey has fully demonstrated great skill and perseverance to stay ahead of competitors, achieving an excellent result for Hong Kong. She has brought glory to the city and has made me and Hong Kong people proud.

     "We are thrilled that the Hong Kong, China Delegation has won a gold medal and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, achieving historic breakthroughs in fencing and swimming. I believe that with the support of all Hong Kong people, the athletes will continue to perform at their best to strive for good results," Mrs Lam said.

     Haughey has started a glorious new chapter for Hong Kong swimming by winning a silver medal at the Toyko Olympics. She first won the silver medal in the Women's 200m Individual Medley event in the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2014. In the same year, her teams won bronze medals in the Women's 4x100m Medley Relay and the Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay in the Asian Games.
