LegCo Panel on Security visits Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution (with photos)

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Security visited the Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution (TGCI) today (July 23) to better understand the operation and future development of "Smart Prison".
 
     Accompanied by the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Woo Ying-ming, Members received briefings on the Persons in Custody Self-management System, the Security and Monitoring System and the Operational and Management System. Members observed various demonstrations to learn how the application of information technologies enhances operational efficiency in the daily management and security aspects of the TGCI.
 
     Members also visited the dormitory to learn about its design features. Meanwhile, correctional officers briefed Members on the Staff Handheld Device, which enables the handling of the daily matters of persons in custody and storage of relevant information through electronic and digital means, so as to further enhance work efficiency.
 
     The TGCI was a minimum security institution before renovation. It has been converted into the first "Smart Prison" in Hong Kong and is used for the detention of non-refoulement claimants.
 
     Members participating in the visit were the Panel Chairman, Mr Chan Hak-kan; Deputy Panel Chairman, Ms Yung Hoi-yan; Panel members Mr Paul Tse, Mr Frankie Yick, Mr Yiu Si-wing, Mr Ma Fung-kwok, Ms Elizabeth Quat, Mr Chung Kwok-pan, Mr Chan Chun-ying, Dr Cheng Chung-tai and Mr Tony Tse.
