*********************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of paediatric patients confirmed to be carriers of Rhinovirus/Enterovirus in paediatrics ward, the spokesman for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (May 15):

     One more two-years-old male paediatric patient and one more staff member in a paediatric ward had presented with respiratory symptoms today. Appropriate viral test was arranged for the paediatric patient and staff. Their test results are positive to Rhinovirus/Enterovirus. The paediatric patient is treated under isolation with stable condition, and the staff member is currently on leave.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have been adopted according to the established guidelines:

  1.  Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
  2.  Enhance medical surveillance of the paediatric patients in the ward concerned; and
  3.  Apply stringent droplet and contact precautions and enhance hand hygiene of staff and paediatric patients.

     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the other paediatric patients in the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
