Shatin Hospital Legionnaires' Disease latest update

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for the Shatin Hospital made the following announcement today (April 4) regarding the latest update of a Legionella infection case:
      
     An 85-year-old male patient in the medical and geriatric ward was diagnosed with Legionnaires' Disease (LD) on February 23 and discharged on March 2 after treatment. All other patients who have stayed in the same ward with the confirmed patient during the same time period have been reviewed with no further LD case detected.
      
     After close liaison with the Centre for Health Protection and with regard to the laboratory results of water and environmental samples collected, the hospital will arrange thorough disinfection of the respective water supply system on April 6 and the disinfection procedure is expected to finish on the next day (April 7). Water supply in the hospital will be partially affected during the procedure. Preparatory arrangements including briefing to staff and patients and the provision of distilled and clean water to the wards concerned and affected areas will be made accordingly.
      
     During the disinfection procedure, hospital operation will be maintained and patient service will not be affected.
