The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesman for Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) made the following announcement today (December 14) regarding a patient tested preliminarily positive for COVID-19:

A 61-year-old female patient attended YCH Accident and Emergency Department yesterday afternoon (December 13) due to fever and persistent cough. The patient was admitted to a side room of a general medical ward and was further transferred to the airborne infection isolation room in the evening. The hospital arranged COVID-19 test for her and the test result was positive. The patient was transferred to the isolation ward immediately and she is currently in stable condition.

Upon receiving the patient's test result, the hospital's infection control team conducted contact tracing. Two patients who had stayed in the same side room with the patient concerned were classified as close contacts and will be quarantined for 14 days. A nurse who assisted the patient while she was collecting the deep throat saliva without appropriate personal protective equipment was also classified as close contact and required quarantine for 14 days. Contact tracing is in progress.

The hospital completed thorough cleansing and disinfection of the areas in the ward concerned. The hospital would continue to closely monitor the health of the staff and patients and communicate with the Centre for Health Protection about the latest situation.
