Person in custody rescued from suicide dies in public hospital a day later

     A 54-year-old male remand person in custody at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre attempted suicide yesterday (October 8). After rescue, he was sent to a public hospital for treatment and was subsequently certified dead today (October 9).

     At 11.47am yesterday, the person in custody attempted suicide by tying pants around his neck inside the cell. Correctional officers immediately provided first aid treatment to the person in custody and sent him to a public hospital for treatment. After being rescued, he received in-patient treatment in the public hospital. His condition deteriorated this morning and he was certified dead at 10.18am.

     The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.

     The person in custody was remanded for the offence of possession of a dangerous drug in September 2020.
