Update on Candida auris cases in Yan Chai Hospital
**************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier cluster of Candida auris carrier cases, the spokesperson for Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) gave the following update today (September 2):

     According to the contact tracing, it was confirmed that three more female patients (aged 75 to 101), who resided in the same ward, were Candida auris carriers without sign of infection.

     Among the three patients, one passed away on September 1 due to her underlying illnesses; another one is being treated in YCH under isolation with stable condition. One discharged patient was an old age home resident. The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) and the Community Nursing Services had been informed of the case for follow-up actions.

     In accordance with the prevailing guidelines, the hospital has conducted contact tracing in the wards concerned. The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:

     1. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wards concerned;
     2. Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures; and
     3. Application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients.

     The hospital would continue to closely monitor the situation of the patients. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the CHP for necessary follow-up.
