Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra to showcase rich variety of Chinese traditional music
***************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) of the Music Office under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold its annual concert, "South meets North: a Musical Conflux" at 2pm on December 1 (Sunday). The orchestra will perform a variety of well-known Chinese compositions in the concert, to be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

The annual concert will be conducted by Kwok Kin-ming and Tsui Ying-fai. The HKYCO will collaborate with its zheng principal Yeung Ching-ho and young guest Cantonese opera singer Helli Yemina Chung to perform the zheng concerto "Sad Memories of Lin'an" and Cantonese opera maestro Ma Si-tsang's classic "Departure of Zhaojun" respectively. Inspired by the traditional song "All Red the River", "Sad Memories of Lin'an" carries an emotional melody. "Departure of Zhaojun" retains the original singing style of Cantonese opera while demonstrating the uniqueness of large ensembles. In addition, the Music Office Youth Choir will join the performance of "Monk Jumps over the Wall" to vividly present the traditional singing of the Chaoshan region.

The repertoire will also include the classical tune "Cantonese Tunes Medley"; "Flame-red Flowers in Full Bloom", a work commissioned by the Music Office which depicts the magnificent scenery of Jiangnan in springtime; and excerpts from "Redden Sorghum", which reveals the unremitting efforts of the people of northeast China to keep moving forward in life.

Established in 1978, the HKYCO has around 80 members. The orchestra has taken part in numerous major local performances, and has received high acclaim for its performances on overseas tours. Zheng soloist Yeung Ching-ho is a recent recipient of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, and was awarded the gold medal in the 6th International Zheng Contest (Professional Youth Group). She is now the zheng principal of the HKYCO. Guest Cantonese opera singer Helli Yemina Chung, a three-time consecutive champion of the Hong Kong Interschool Cantonese Opera Singing Competition, is currently a part-time tutor teaching Cantonese opera singing at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
