SJ to attend 4th Qianhai Legal Intelligence Forum
*************************************************
The Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, will depart for Shenzhen tomorrow afternoon (November 1) to attend the 4th Qianhai Legal Intelligence Forum on November 2 and a mock hearing activity under the "Seminars on Adjudicating with Common Law Concepts" series on November 3.

The forum, jointly organised by the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court, the Bureau of Justice of Shenzhen Municipality, the Authority of Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone of Shenzhen Municipality (Qianhai Authority) and the Shenzhen Law Society, carries the theme "International Commercial Mediation: International Experience and Chinese Practice".

At the forum, Ms Cheng will deliver a speech on "Recent Developments and Practical Experiences of International Commercial Mediation", and attend the "Mediate First" Pledge Ceremony co-organised by the Department of Justice (DoJ) together with the Bureau of Justice of Shenzhen Municipality and the Qianhai Authority. The "Mediate First" Pledge campaign was launched by the DoJ to promote the use of mediation to resolve disputes. This will be the second "Mediate First" Pledge event held by the DoJ outside Hong Kong, following the first in August this year successfully held in Shanghai.

In the morning on November 3, Ms Cheng will attend a mock hearing activity under the "Seminars on Adjudicating with Common Law Concepts" series, jointly organised by the DoJ and the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court. This is another event organised under the Framework Arrangement on legal exchange and mutual learning signed by the DoJ and the High People's Court of Guangdong Province in September this year. Hong Kong legal practitioners are invited to demonstrate a mock hearing to enhance Mainland judges' understanding of Hong Kong's court proceedings and to promote exchange between the legal community of the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Upon her arrival in Shenzhen tomorrow, Ms Cheng will attend a dinner hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government in the evening.

Ms Cheng will return to Hong Kong in the afternoon on November 3.
