***************************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (October 15) the October 2019 issue of the "Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics" (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Port Cargo Statistics, 2008 to 2018" and "Drug Situation in Hong Kong in 2018". Statistics presented in the "Drug Situation in Hong Kong in 2018" article are based on the data source from the Security Bureau, Government Secretariat.

"Port Cargo Statistics, 2008 to 2018"

Although Hong Kong's port cargo throughput decreased slightly from 259.4 million tonnes in 2008 to 258.5 million tonnes in 2018, the port of Hong Kong was still one of the busiest ports in the world. The port cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for 48.1% of Hong Kong's port cargo throughput in 2018. About 76.5% of the port cargo movements between Hong Kong and the Mainland were in the Pearl River Delta region.

"Drug Situation in Hong Kong in 2018"

Through the concerted efforts of the Government and the community, the drug problem in Hong Kong has ameliorated in the past few years. While the total number of reported drug abusers continued to decline in 2018, the problems of signs of increased youth drug abuse (particularly of cannabis and cocaine), drug abuse among young adults and hidden drug abuse still require attention. This feature article gives an overview of the drug situation in Hong Kong in 2018 by making reference to statistics derived from the Central Registry of Drug Abuse maintained by the Security Bureau, Government Secretariat. Moreover, statistics on the "2017/18 Survey of Drug Use among Students" and law enforcement on drug offences are presented. These data and findings provide useful information on the latest drug situation in Hong Kong, and support an evidence-based approach to the formulation of anti-drug policy and measures.

It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; National Income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism.
