"Inheritance - The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Japan" exhibition to showcase valuable Japanese and Hong Kong craftsmanship (with photos)

     ​An exhibition entitled "Inheritance - The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Japan" will be open to the public at the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall tomorrow (October 12). The exhibition will showcase several valuable intangible cultural heritage (ICH) exhibits from Japan as well as Hong Kong, inviting visitors to experience the fascinating history of the two places.

     The exhibition will introduce the inheritance of ICH in Japan through about 100 fascinating exhibits, including ceramics, metalwork, lacquer work, woodcarvings and textiles on loan from Japanese ICH practitioners. With support from local craftspeople, the event will also feature a selection of about 15 exhibits such as painted porcelain, paper craft and wood sculpture from Hong Kong, with a view to spotlighting the craftsmanship of Hong Kong ICH masters.

     To enable visitors to appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship behind the exhibits, a series of weekend programmes - comprising live demonstrations by Japan ICH bearers, talks and workshops - will be held during the exhibition period. A dialogue session between Japan and Hong Kong ICH bearers will also be available to help visitors understand the differences between the cultural traditions and the ICH bearers' stories of the two places.

     The exhibition is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and jointly organised by the department's ICH Office and the Wado Project. Supported by the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, it is a featured programme of the Japan Autumn Festival in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Culture Festival. The exhibition will run until November 3.
