Operational event at Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station
****************************************************
An operational event at Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station (YNPS) was reported today (September 24) on the website of Yangjiang Nuclear Power Co Ltd (YNPC), a spokesperson for the Security Bureau said today.

YNPS began its planned precautionary maintenance work on the auxiliary diesel generator (as a reserve to the emergency diesel generator) on August 22. On September 5, station staff discovered a malfunction of a can bearing of the said generator during the post-maintenance running test, and immediately carried out the relevant inspection and repair work. As at September 22, the time taken for the maintenance of the auxiliary diesel generator had exceeded the time requirement set out in the relevant technical specifications.

Auxiliary diesel generators usually remain in offline condition, as reserves to emergency diesel generators. At present, YNPS is organising technical staff to carry out event analysis as well as inspection and maintenance work. It is expected that the generator can return to normal condition on October 5.

The event was classified as a "Below Scale Licensing Operational Event" (i.e. "Level 0" event) on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and has no effect on the safe operation of the nuclear power station, the health of the workers, the nearby public or the environment. All nuclear generating units currently in operation at YNPS remain in safe and stable operation.

YNPC has disclosed the details of this event on its website today. They can be viewed in the "operational events" section under the "nuclear and radiation safety information" webpage of the YNPC website (www.yjnp.com.cn) (Chinese only).
