The Hong Kong Contract Bridge Teams (Open, Women and Seniors) are now participating in the 44th World Bridge Team Championships in Wuhan. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Wuhan (WHETO) is fully supporting the teams to achieve good results in the competition. The Championships is the most prestigious event held by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) and participating teams must have qualified in the respective WBF zones. Following their success in last year's Asian Games, in which they won two silver medals and two bronze medals, the Hong Kong teams qualified in the Asia Pacific Bridge Federation Championships held in June this year.

The Director of the WHETO, Mr Vincent Fung, said that according to the Basic Law, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) may use the name "Hong Kong, China" to participate in international sports competitions and related activities. He added that the HKSAR may on its own, using the name "Hong Kong, China", maintain and develop relations and conclude and implement agreements with foreign states and regions and relevant international organisations in the appropriate fields, including the economic, trade, financial and monetary, shipping, communications, tourism, cultural and sports fields. Under the framework of "one country, two systems", the HKSAR is active in various aspects in the international arena and maintains close ties and exchanges worldwide.

The 44th World Bridge Team Championships are being held in the Wuhan International Conference and Exhibition Centre from September 14 to 28.
