Cluster of Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Shatin Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

  The spokesman for Shatin Hospital (SH) made the following announcement today (September 16):

  Four patients (aged 72 to 95) in a medical and geriatric ward of SH was confirmed to have been infected with Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter (CRA) since September 2. One patient is currently under surveillance and isolation treatment in stable condition. Two patients have been discharged, while the remaining one has passed away due to his underlying disease.

  In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index case. Seven more patients (aged 71 to 93) have been confirmed as CRA carriers without any clinical symptoms. Three of them have been discharged already. The other four patients are under isolation treatment in stable condition.

  Admission to the ward has been suspended and restricted visiting has been imposed. The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:
 
  • Enhance cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
  • Apply stringent contact precautions and enhance hand hygiene; and
  • Enhance attention to contamination-prone procedures.
     
  The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-ups. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
