The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, today (August 27) congratulated Dr Ng Yun-hau, Associate Professor of the School of Energy and Environment at the City University of Hong Kong, on winning the 2019 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE).
      
     "Dr Ng specialises in using sunlight to split water into clean hydrogen to generate renewable energy. The award recognises Dr Ng's research excellence in the area of natural sciences, and his close co-operation with scientists from other APEC member economies," Mr Yang said.
      
     The Innovation and Technology Commission invited nominations from nine local universities in April this year and nominated Dr Ng for the award. Dr Ng was then selected by the APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation member economies as this year's winner. The award ceremony was held on August 26 in Puerto Varas, Chile.
      
     The annual ASPIRE recognises young scientists who are under the age of 40 and have demonstrated a commitment to both excellence in scientific research as shown by scholarly publications as well as co-operation with scientists from other APEC economies. The theme of this year is "Natural Laboratories".
