Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled vehicle parts (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs yesterday (June 27) seized 1 789 suspected smuggled vehicle parts with an estimated market value of about $1 million at Shenzhen Bay Control Point and Sheung Shui.

     Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday afternoon and seized 59 vehicle parts underneath the passenger seat and in the boot of the car. The 58-year-old male driver and the 41-year-old female passenger were arrested.

     After a follow-up investigation, Customs officers further seized 1 730 vehicle parts and packing materials at a warehouse in Sheung Shui. Three men in the warehouse, aged between 18 and 34, were arrested.

     Investigation is ongoing.

     Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
