SED visits Sai Kung District (with photos)
******************************************
The Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, today (May 17) visited Sai Kung District to learn more about the learning outcomes of non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students and to meet with local District Council members.

Accompanied by the Chairman of Sai Kung District Council, Mr George Ng, and the District Officer (Sai Kung), Mr David Chiu, Mr Yeung first went to Sai Kung Central Lee Siu Yam Memorial School, where he was briefed by the school management on its curriculum, activities and learning support programmes for students. He also watched students taking part in various activities and listened to opinions expressed by teaching staff and parents of the school.

At this primary school, over one-third of the students are NCS children from various countries in Asia, Europe and North America. Apart from the formal Chinese Language curriculum, the school also teaches school-based pull-out programmes on listening, speaking, literacy, reading, writing and integrated skills to help NCS students learn Chinese progressively.

The school has implemented the Chinese Language Curriculum Second Language Learning Framework, with reading as the entry point from Primary One. It also uses the Chinese Language Assessment Tools to review students’ starting point in planning the school-based curriculum and developing effective teaching strategies to cater for the language-learning needs of NCS students.

Mr Yeung thanked the school for making good use of the teaching resources provided by the Education Bureau in designing the school-based curriculum, as well as in organising diverse after-school interest classes such as sports activities, African drums, lion dance and Chinese dance for students, so as to promote cultural integration and help the NCS students adapt to school and community life.

He then met with members of Sai Kung District Council to exchange views on education and other district issues.
