Transcript of remarks of SFH at media session
*********************************************
Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, after attending the opening ceremony of the Health Promotion Symposium cum Central Health Education Unit 40th Anniversary Celebration today (May 4):

Reporter: Professor, would you briefly tell us what the action plan will involve because it mainly involves changing people's lifestyle, right?

Secretary for Food and Health: The Strategy and Action Plan to Prevent and Control Non-communicable Diseases in Hong Kong will actually involve nine targets. Basically it is controlling and also preventing the risks of these non-communicable diseases, namely hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other chronic diseases. I can basically summarise the programmes of the Action Plan into tobacco control, alcohol control, doing more exercise, having less consumption of sugar and salt, as well as healthy diet. So basically these are prevention strategies. The World Health Organization has recommended effective strategies and we will make reference to these strategies in implementing all the measures and strategies. As far as the Food and Health Bureau is concerned, we will also pay great attention to this action plan and in all our initiatives such as promoting primary healthcare in the community, and also setting up District Health Centres. We will also take non-communicable diseases prevention as one of our key strategies. Thank you.
