Correctional officers stop person in custody from committing suicide by hanging
*******************************************************************************
Correctional officers stopped a 41-year-old male person in custody from committing suicide by hanging in Stanley Prison today (April 27).

At 9.57am today, a correctional officer found the person in custody hanging with his hospital bedcover tied to the grill bars of the observation cell inside the institution hospital. He had also slashed his wrists. The officer immediately called for reinforcements and provided him with first aid treatment. After examination and treatment by a Medical Officer, the person in custody was sent to a public hospital for further observation and treatment.

The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police. A clinical psychologist of the department will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent persons in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He was accommodated in an observation cell at the institution hospital for observation due to emotional problems.
