Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled smartphones (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs seized a total of 1 469 suspected smuggled smartphones at Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday (April 18) and today (April 19) with an estimated market value of about $5 million.

     Customs officers yesterday and today separately intercepted two outgoing coaches at Shenzhen Bay Control Point. Upon inspection, 406 smartphones were found inside two boards on one of the vehicles, while 1 008 smartphones were found inside a tire in the baggage compartment of the other vehicle. The two male drivers, aged 50 and 55, were arrested. 

     Customs officers today also intercepted an outgoing private vehicle at Shenzhen Bay Control Point and found 55 smartphones underneath the driver's seat. A 39-year-old male driver was arrested.

     Investigations are ongoing.

     Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
