Acclaimed Chinese music performers to give commemorative concerts for erhu maestro Tong Leung-tak

Tong Leung-tak (1938-2010) was also a composer, conductor and educator. Tong and his family moved to Hong Kong in 1977, where he was soon appointed as Acting Concertmaster by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. For the 20 years he worked at the Music Office, Tong focused on training young musicians in Chinese music and the promotion of the genre. The concert programme includes the most representative erhu pieces, including the string-and-wind ensemble repertoire of the Tang's Family Ensemble.
The concerts also mark the 55th anniversary of the first National Erhu Competition, which was part of the inaugural Shanghai Spring Music Festival of 1963. The competition marked a milestone in the development of the erhu - not only did it nurture a talented generation of virtuosi, including the likes of Min Huifen, Jiang Xunfeng, Xiao Baiyong, Wang Guotong, Shen Fengquan, Lu Rirong and Tong Leung-tak (who won a Class Two Award in the competition), but it also laid the foundation for many works that would have tremendous influence on Chinese traditional music, such as "The Sanmen Gorge Capriccio", "A Henan Ditty", "Horse Racing" and "Qingqiang Theme Capriccio".

Programme: Jiangnan string and wind music "Festival March", "Hua Sanliu"; erhu solos "Zhonghua Liuban" and "In the Meadow"; dizi solo "Autumn Moon Upon Placid Lake"; pipa solo "Song of Frontier"; and the orchestral "Joyous Rain" and "Strolling Along the Su Embankment".
