Cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cases in Kwong Wah Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) made the following announcement today (April 4):
 
     A 23-day-old baby girl of the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of KWH was confirmed to have been infected with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on March 26. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened the infants who had contact with the index case. Two more babies (one male and one female, aged 13 days to 23 days) who had stayed in the unit were confirmed to be carriers of MRSA without clinical symptoms. These three babies are still being hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition.
 
     Infection control measures in the SCBU have already been stepped up according to prevailing guidelines. The hospital will perform enhanced medical surveillance and screening of the babies in the SCBU.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
