Caritas Medical Centre announces sentinel event
***********************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) announces a sentinel event today (March 24) as below:

A male patient with hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hearing impairment was admitted to the medical ward of CMC on March 8 due to fever and right hip pain. The Hospital had all along been providing the patient with appropriate treatment. The patient's condition as well as emotion had been stable since admission.

At around 1.30am on March 17, it was noted that a duty nurse had performed nursing care procedure to other patients in the cubicle. The patient remained stable and no abnormality was observed. The patient was suspected of committing suicide after being found hanging himself on the lifting pole of the bed with a feeding bib at around 2am. The duty nurse released the patient from the lifting pole and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately. The patient regained heartbeat after CPR, and was transferred to intensive care unit for further management. The Hospital also reported the incident to the Police for investigation. The patient was certified dead this afternoon. The Hospital was very sad about the incident and expressed deep condolences to the family members, to whom assistance would be offered when needed.

The Hospital is very concerned about the incident, which has also been categorised as a sentinel event.  The incident has been reported to the Head Office of Hospital Authority. In accordance with the procedures, a Root Cause Analysis Panel will be set up to look into the incident with recommendations proposed to prevent the recurrence of similar incident. The incident has also been reported to the coroner.
