Hong Kong Customs mounts operation to combat illicit cigarettes (with photo)

During an anti-illicit cigarette operation yesterday, Customs officers seized a total of about 270 000 suspected illicit cigarettes from a stone hut and a private vehicle in Man Kam To. A 48-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were arrested. Later, Customs officers further seized about 300 000 suspected illicit cigarettes from a metal shed in the vicinity.
The private vehicle has been detained and investigation is ongoing.
Under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, anyone involved in dealing with, possession of, selling or buying illicit cigarettes commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $1 million and imprisonment for two years.
