"SCI-FI-SCI" to feature two fascinating science-fiction films
**************************************************************
Science-fiction films are a hybrid of science and fantasy which aim to spark the audience's curiosity and imagination. Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and co-organised by the Film Programmes Office and the Hong Kong Science Museum, "SCI-FI-SCI" features two science-fiction films to be screened on April 8, 15 and 22 at the Cinema of the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum.

In addition, post-screening talks will be arranged with veteran film critics Lam Kee-to and Chang Wai-hung, science scholars Professor David Chan and Dr Joe Ling, and the Assistant Curator of the Hong Kong Science Museum, Dr So Chu-wing, to explore the meaning behind the films with audiences.

Regarded as a contemporary visionary masterpiece, Alfonso Cuarón's "Children of Men" (2006) portends a time when the human race has been hit with an infertility crisis - in 2027. The male lead, Theo, is called up by the head of a militant group to protect a young refugee named Kee - who is the only pregnant woman left on Earth - and help her escape from the United Kingdom, where oppressive immigration laws on refugees are in force. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki's amazing long takes showcase scenarios where the protagonists face uncertainty amid life and death situations. The film won Best Cinematography at the BAFTA Awards 2007, Best Science Fiction Film at the Saturn Awards 2007 and other awards.

In Ridley Scott's "The Martian" (2015), astronaut Mark gets lost along with other crew members in a dust storm during a mission to Mars. Isolated and helpless on Mars, Mark has to count on his own skills to survive. Meanwhile, NASA promptly forms a team comprising global science experts and astronauts to rescue him. The film uses first-class technology to construct a realistic take on survival in the future with a scientific perspective. The film won numerous awards including Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes 2016.

All films are in English and with Chinese and English subtitles.
