******************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (March 1):

An 86-year-old male patient in a mixed surgical ward of QEH was confirmed as having Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on February 22. Two more patients (one male and one female, aged 92 and 82) were confirmed to be VRE carriers without any symptoms of infection. The patient aged 86 is in stable condition. The remaining two patients are in critical condition due to underlying disease.

Infection control measures in the ward concerned have already been stepped up according to prevailing guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close medical surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
