Blood donor centres open during Chinese New Year holiday (with photo)
*********************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) today (February 13) said that with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, the BTS hopes members of the public will keep supporting blood donation in order to maintain a stable and sufficient blood inventory. Some donor centres will continue their service during the Chinese New Year holiday to facilitate blood donation by members of the public. (Please also refer to the attachment.)

As a token of appreciation, people who donate blood from February 16 to 19 will be presented with a "Fook Bag" (see picture) while stocks last.

To shorten the waiting time for blood donation, the BTS appealed to donors who are planning to donate blood at the Tsuen Wan, Shatin and West Kowloon Donor Centres to make reservations via the Online Appointment Service. Through the online system, donors can choose their desired date and time to visit a donor centre. This service will be made available for other donor centres gradually in the coming months. The Online Appointment Service can be accessed at www.blooddonor.org.hk

The spokesperson also said that blood collection figures for the past two days were as follows: registration of 1 839 donors and successful collection of 1 112 blood units on February 11 and registration of 1 976 donors and successful collection of 1 381 blood units on February 12. The registration numbers of both days were record highs and the collection of 1 381 blood units was the highest level recorded in the past 10 years. The BTS expressed gratitude to all donors who support blood donation and apologised for the long waiting times for blood donation at donor centres. Additional manpower has been arranged to relieve the situation and all staff will strive to maintain good service for all donors.

Anyone aged between 16 and 66 (donation is possible up to the age of 76 if predetermined conditions are met), weighing over 41 kilograms and in good health is eligible to give blood. Male and female adult donors aged 18 or above can donate every 75 days and every 105 days respectively. Youths aged 16 and 17 can donate every 150 days.

Please visit the BTS website at www.ha.org.hk/rcbts or call 2710 1234 for details of donor centres.
