Acting SCED speaks on new refinement measures for Food Truck Pilot Scheme
*************************************************************************
Following is the transcript of remarks by the Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Dr Bernard Chan, at a media session on the new refinement measures for the Food Truck Pilot Scheme before visiting the Golden Age Expo and Summit 2018 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (January 26):

Reporter: There are complaints from food truck operators saying that basically the scheme isn't that successful because of the high operation cost and restrictions on the venues. So how exactly do you think the relaxed measures are going to help those operators in attracting more interest in the Food Truck Pilot Scheme?

Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: I have mentioned just now, originally we have eight fixed venues. By February 5, we are going to make the last two venues flexible for the operators (by turning them into optional venues) as well. That means if they choose not to operate in those venues, they don't have to pay the rents. They can go to their selected events so that they have more flexibility. In that sense, we believe that it will provide them with more flexibility and more room to make more profits. We are going to look at how the new series of initiatives will help them.

Reporter: Does it mean that actually they are free to pick public events or any spots they want in Hong Kong and then apply to your bureau. What are your considerations?

Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: Yes, they need to apply to us and we will look into the applications. They are free to pick any public events. First of all, in terms of traffic, they cannot block the traffic. Also, the events need to have the temporary place of public entertainment licence from the FEHD (Food and Environmental Hygiene Department). If they have those, we will look into them and consider the cases.
