CFS orders recall of Taiwanese prepackaged candy suspected to contain expired ingredients
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (January 19) urged the public not to consume a kind of prepackaged candy imported from Taiwan upon learning that the Taiwanese authorities have found that expired ingredients might have been used in the production of the product concerned. The CFS has instructed the local importer concerned to initiate a recall. The trade should also stop selling the affected product should they possess it.
     Product details are as follows:
Product name: DHA+ Ca for Kids Candy
Brand Name : Kiwi House
Place of origin: Taiwan
Importer: Life Science Organisation New Zealand Limited
Packing : 120 grams per tin
Expiry date: December 29, 2018
The spokesman said, "In view of media reports that the Taiwanese authorities concerned have found that expired ingredients might have been used in the production of several kinds of candy products and that some of the products might have been exported to Hong Kong, the CFS has immediately contacted the Taiwanese authorities concerned for more information and proactively followed up with local importers and retailers. Preliminary investigation showed that the above-mentioned importer had imported about 4800 tins of the affected product, with all of them distributed or given out to its customers. The Centre has immediately instructed the importer concerned to stop sale and remove from shelves the above product and initiate a recall. Members of the public may call the hotline of the importer at 3176 0901 during office hours for enquiries about the recall.
According to Section 54 of the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap 132), all food available for sale in Hong Kong, locally produced or imported, should be fit for human consumption. An offender is subject to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for six months upon conviction.
The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, continue to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate action. Investigation is on-going.
