Anti-drug singing contest spreads positive energy (with photos)
***************************************************************
The finals of an anti-drug singing contest entitled "My Story, My Song", jointly organised by the Narcotics Division (ND) of the Security Bureau, the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Radio 2, was held today (December 16) to spread positive energy and appeal to young people to stay away from drugs through contestants' singing and heartening stories.

A spokesman for the ND said, "The anti-drug singing contest was the grand finale of the territory-wide anti-drug campaign Fight Drugs Together 2017. The purpose was to encourage young people to develop healthy interests, learn to handle stresses and challenges in daily life with positive attitudes, and resist drug temptations."

The 12 finalists who entered today's finals are between 19 and 31 years old. They beat more than 300 other contestants in the preliminaries and the semi-finals held in October. When registering for the contest, they were required to submit a demo recording of their individual chosen songs as well as a short article on their past experience in facing adversities and overcoming difficulties, so as to convey positive energy through writing and music.

The anti-drug singing contest was held at the VTC Auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute. Officiating at today's contest were the Chairman of ACAN, Dr Ben Cheung; the Commissioner for Narcotics, Ms Manda Chan; and the Controller (Radio) of RTHK, Mr Brian Chow. The event attracted an audience of more than 600 members from the community to enjoy the contest and support the contestants.

Mr Chow and artistes Joey Tang, Gary Tong and James Ng were invited to be adjudicators. They not only provided the contestants with valuable advice on singing skills, but also encouraged them to maintain positive life values in face of challenges. Artistes who performed in today's contest included Hoffman Cheng, Jennifer Yu, Rona Tsui and Alvin Ng.

After several rounds of keen competition, Mr Gu Li-quan eventually won the contest and Mr Vincent Ho received the highest number of votes in online voting. They both received a loud round of applause from the audience.

The spokesman said, "We are glad that the anti-drug singing contest received enthusiastic support. Young people are encouraged to participate in healthy activities, establish positive values, and understand that taking drugs is never a way to solve problems or relieve stress. Anyone who suspects that his or her family members or friends may have drug problems can seek help from professional social workers through the ND's 24-hour hotline 186 186, or by sending messages to 98 186 186 by WhatsApp or WeChat."

The territory-wide anti-drug campaign Fight Drugs Together 2017, with the launching ceremony held this June, comprised a series of programmes. In addition to the anti-drug singing contest held today, there were a disc jockey training course for youngsters on anti-drug knowledge and skills for the production of anti-drug radio shows; a 10-episode radio programme to encourage young people and working youths to stay away from drugs; and a series of one-minute radio segments to enhance the audience's knowledge of drug harms and encourage early help-seeking.
