*******************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr Law Chi-kwong, visited Kwun Tong District today (December 15) to pay regards to some elderly residents and meet with members of the District Council.

Accompanied by the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Dr Bunny Chan and Mr Hung Kam-in respectively; the District Officer (Kwun Tong), Mr Steve Tse; and the District Social Welfare Officer (Kwun Tong), Ms Ip Siu-ming, Dr Law first visited On Tat Neighbourhood Elderly Centre of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) at On Tat Estate.

Both On Tat Estate and the adjacent On Tai Estate are new public rental housing (PRH) estates, and more than 28 000 residents have already moved into the two estates. The District Social Welfare Offices of the Social Welfare Department (SWD) have been working closely with relevant departments and the District Council on the planning of social welfare services for newly completed PRH estates. The On Tat Neighbourhood Elderly Centre of the TWGHs is one of the examples.

Dr Law was briefed on the services of the neighbourhood elderly centre. He chatted with the elderly there and reminded them to bundle up in view of the recent cold weather and wished them a happy Winter Solstice Festival.

Dr Law then attended the launch ceremony of Operation Warm Winter - Home Visit to the Elderly, jointly organised by the Kwun Tong District Council, the Kwun Tong District Office and the SWD, at Lam Tin (East) Community Hall. Under the annual large-scale activity, volunteers are being mobilised to visit more than 1 800 elderly singletons and elderly doubleton families in the district this year. Dr Law also paid home visits to an elderly singleton and an elderly couple today. He presented them with gift packs to express care and warm wishes for the festive season.

Afterwards, Dr Law proceeded to the Kwun Tong District Council to meet with members of the council in order to have a better grasp of the overall development of the district, and to exchange views on various issues of their concern and other district matters.
