Territory-wide pedestrian safety operation concludes

     Police concluded a five-day territory-wide pedestrian safety operation yesterday (December 12). Through strengthened enforcement action, pedestrians, senior citizens in particular, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

     A total of 27 verbal warnings and 1,240 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road traffic regulations during the operation.

     Police issued 19 verbal warnings and 961 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 147 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, 69 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than by means of the light signal crossing, and eight verbal warnings and 63 summonses for other traffic offences.

     "Pedestrians are reminded to be careful and cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000", a Police spokesman said.

     In addition to daily enforcement action, Police will continue to enhance publicity and education for road users in complying with traffic regulations, with a view to avoiding traffic accidents and maintaining smooth traffic flow.
