***************************************************************************
A team of six Hong Kong students achieved excellent results in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2017, winning three gold and three silver medals.

The IJSO 2017 was held in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, from December 4 to 11. A total of 279 scientifically gifted students from 48 countries or regions participated in the event.

The IJSO is a science competition for secondary school students aged 15 or below. The competition covers three disciplines, namely physics, chemistry and biology, up to senior secondary level. It comprises written assessments and science experiments on unfamiliar problems that require analytical and problem-solving skills.

The Hong Kong team members were selected from the IJSO 2017 - Hong Kong Screening. They were also the best performers in the IJSO training programme. Chau Chun-wang (St Margaret's Co-educational English Secondary and Primary School), Chow King-ngai (La Salle College) and Rodman Poon Pok-man (Pui Ching Middle School) each won a gold medal, while Kelvin Lo Chun-hei (St Paul’s Co-educational College), Ng Sze-mai (Diocesan Girls' School) and Yip Yan-ming (PLK Centenary Li Shiu Chung Memorial College) each won a silver medal.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, congratulated the Hong Kong team today (December 12) on their outstanding performance. He said, "The world today is experiencing rapid developments in science and technology. The outstanding achievements of the Hong Kong team fully reflect Hong Kong students' unlimited potential in these fields. The Education Bureau will continue to support learning activities related to science, technology and mathematics so that more Hong Kong students can acquire rich knowledge and skills and become the new generation of leaders in the development of science and innovation in Hong Kong."

The success of the Hong Kong team in IJSO 2017 demonstrates the fruitful collaboration of various parties including the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education and the tertiary institutions and schools concerned in nurturing gifted students in Hong Kong.
