Transcript of remarks by SEN
****************************
Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending the Release of Guidance Booklet and Experience Sharing Seminar on waste reduction for major community events today (December 11):

Reporter: What's the rationale behind the guideline? Do you have any expected outcome or do you have any plan to make it compulsory?

Secretary for the Environment: The waste reduction guideline for the big events is to reflect the recent accumulation of experience between the Government and the related organisations in waste reduction. For instance, the Rugby Sevens (Hong Kong Sevens), in recent years, has quantified the waste and clean recycling. The effect is positive. In recent years, they have reduced the waste by about half. So, it offers solid experience and also a good guideline to help the relevant government departments and organisations to reduce waste in hosting events. I think the guideline is a step forward and there will be room for further improvement in future when the municipal solid waste charging is in place.
