The Research Grants Council (RGC) today (December 9) held the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) Public Symposium 2017 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The project teams of 14 TRS projects funded in the first three rounds of the TRS exercises shared details of their achievements with 270 participants, including those from the research community and industry as well as government.

The objective of the Theme-based Research Scheme is to focus academic research efforts of the University Grants Committee-funded universities on themes of strategic importance to the long-term development of Hong Kong. Seven rounds of the TRS exercises have been conducted so far.

The Chairman of the RGC, Professor Benjamin Wah, said he was excited by the ground-breaking discoveries of the project teams, which range from breakthroughs in treatments for various diseases, drug discoveries, frontier knowledge and technology for sustainable environment to innovations in logistics networks and financial services.

"These discoveries are closely related to our daily lives and will lead to the betterment of our society. The impact of the project teams' achievements will be long-term," Professor Wah said.

The Symposium featured presentations, the display of posters and demonstrations, while participants had the opportunity for in-depth, face-to-face discussions with the project teams at the event. The summary of the achievements of the TRS projects has been uploaded to the RGC website (www.ugc.edu.hk/doc/eng/rgc/about/events/symposium/brochure.pdf).
