Person in custody commits suicide by hanging at Stanley Prison

     A 48-year-old male person in custody at Stanley Prison committed suicide by hanging today (November 29).

     At about 6.05am, correctional officers discovered that the person in custody had committed suicide by hanging with his bedsheet tied to the grill bars of his cell. The officers immediately called for reinforcement. Upon arrival, reinforcement staff immediately provided first aid treatment and called for an ambulance. The person in custody was then sent to a public hospital for rescue. He was certified dead at 7am today.

     The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.

     The deceased was sentenced to imprisonment for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
