SED visits Tai Po District (with photos)

     The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Kevin Yeung, visited Tai Po District this morning (November 23), where he met and exchanged views with local District Council members and school principals. He also attended the speech day of a secondary school to witness the learning outcomes of its students.
      
     Accompanied by the Chairman of Tai Po District Council (TPDC), Mr Cheung Hok-ming; the Vice-chairperson of the TPDC, Ms Wong Pik-kiu; and the District Officer (Tai Po), Ms Andy Lui, Mr Yeung first met with representatives from the Tai Po District Secondary School Heads Association, the Tai Po District Primary School Heads Association and the Tai Po School Liaison Committee to gauge their views on education.
      
     He then officiated at the 35th Speech Day cum Prize Presentation Ceremony of NT Heung Yee Kuk Tai Po District Secondary School and presented certificates to graduates and awards to students.
      
     Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Yeung extended his gratitude to Heung Yee Kuk for having noticed the education needs of residents moving into Tai Po New Town decades ago, as well as its donation of construction fees for the establishment of the secondary school.
      
     "Over the years, the school has devoted itself to nurturing its students in the five virtues of life - moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic - such that the students do not just acquire subject knowledge but also learn to be good citizens," he said.
      
      "The school set up a career and life planning (CLP) resources centre in 2015 and has designated CLP as one of the major concerns of the school development plan from 2015 to 2018, to provide its students with updated information about further studies and career development. It also offers individual and group counselling services to its students, enabling them to better understand their aspirations, aptitudes and needs and map out their own pathway for further studies and career development."
      
     He said he believes that all-round education can nurture the city's youth to become a new generation with a commitment to society, a sense of national identity, a love for Hong Kong and an international perspective.
      
     Mr Yeung also visited the Tai Po District Council to meet with its Chairman, Mr Cheung Hok-ming, and other District Council members. They exchanged views on a variety of district and social issues.
