Hong Kong Customs recently seized 1 371 electric tooth polishers with a suspected false trade description from a chain retailer with an estimated market value of about $560,000.

     Customs earlier received information alleging that a chain retailer sold a type of electric tooth polisher which claimed to remove dental calculus within a specific time.

     After examination by a dentistry expert, it was confirmed that the electric tooth polishers could not remove dental calculus within the specific time, thus differing from the trade description.

     Customs officers immediately took enforcement action and seized the tooth polishers from the trader. Investigation is ongoing.  
    
     Customs reminds traders to comply with the requirements of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO). False or misleading claims on the effectiveness of a product without sufficient supporting evidence may constitute an offence under the TDO. Also, consumers are reminded to have a clear knowledge of the product details and performance claim before purchase.

     Under the TDO, any person who supplies goods with a false trade description in the course of trade or business, or is in possession of any goods for sale with a false trade description, commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
