The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

Over 90 per cent of residents interviewed were satisfied with the overall design and provisions of eight newly completed public rental housing (PRH) projects, according to the latest Residents Surveys conducted by the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA). This is the fifth consecutive year that the HA has achieved an overall customer satisfaction of over 90 per cent in the Residents Surveys.

The latest Residents Surveys were conducted from 2015 to end-2016, covering eight newly completed PRH projects with 14 425 flats in that period, namely Yee Ming Estate, Mei Tak House of Mei Tung Estate, Kwai Luen Estate, Shui Chuen O Estate, Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate Phase 2, Hung Fuk Estate Phase 1 & 2, Hung Fuk Estate Phase 3 and Chueng Lung Wai Estate. A total of 2 492 interviews were successfully completed.

"According to the Resident Surveys, the overall satisfaction level of the eight newly complete PRH projects is above 90 per cent on average. The Housing Department has issued a paper to members of the HA's Building Committee to report the surveys' findings," an HA spokesman said today (November 5).

The surveys' findings also indicate that tenants' satisfaction levels on flat design, block design, and estate design and provisions are above 80 per cent, above 90 per cent and about 90 per cent respectively.

"On provisions inside flats, the surveys show that among the following items: cooking bench, sink unit in kitchen, kitchen door, bathroom door, shower head and faucet, about 64 per cent to 85 per cent of the tenants retained all of them; about 90 per cent of the tenants retained kitchen door, bathroom door, shower head and faucet; and about 68 per cent to 93 per cent of the tenants retained cooking bench and sink unit in the kitchen," the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the majority of households considered natural lighting and ventilation in internal public areas sufficient, while about 95 per cent of the households were satisfied with the two-level lighting system at lift lobbies and corridors on typical floors. Over 90 per cent of the households were satisfied with the signage systems and the majority of households were satisfied with the recreational facilities, greenery and soft landscaping design in the estates.

Since 2003/04, the HA has been engaging independent term service providers to conduct Residents Surveys for each newly completed PRH project to gauge residents' satisfaction levels on the design and provisions in the estates after they have lived there more than one year.

"Based on information collected in Residents Surveys, we have reviewed and refined public housing design standards and provisions over the years. Starting from the next survey, we shall introduce new questions, such as whether they have had any improvement in sleeping quality after moving into our new housing estates, and time spent on outdoor walks and socialising with neighbours, with a view to building up a systematic database on healthy buildings," the spokesman said.
