Update on suspected food poisoning clusters related to restaurant in Yau Tong
*****************************************************************************
     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (November 1) reported an update on its investigations announced on October 30 into two suspected food poisoning clusters related to a restaurant in Yau Tong.

     Five additional clusters were identified. They are:

  1. Three females aged from 1 to 37 who developed abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever some six to 14 hours after their dinner in the restaurant on October 27;
  2. One boy and one girl aged from 10 to 13 who presented with similar symptoms about 16 to 18 hours after their meal in the restaurant on October 28 afternoon;
  3. Two females aged 5 and 33 who had similar symptoms some five to 14 hours after their dinner in the restaurant on October 28;
  4. Two males and one female aged from 9 to 40 having similar symptoms about six to 18 hours after their lunch in the restaurant on October 28; and
  5. One man and one woman aged from 23 to 26 having similar symptoms about 11 to 12 hours after their dinner in the restaurant on October 28.

     Among them, 10 have sought medical attention and two required hospitalisation for management. All affected persons are in stable condition.

     "To date, seven recent clusters affecting 16 persons dining in the same restaurant have been recorded. Epidemiological investigations show that they all consumed gemelli with tomatoes and eggs before investigations and control measures instituted by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. Investigations are ongoing," a spokesman for the CHP said.

     When consuming eggs, the CHP reminded the public to avoid eating raw or undercooked eggs and their products, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants and young children, pregnant women and the immunocompromised. They should check with food premises whether the dishes contain raw eggs, if necessary.
