Territory-wide safe cycling operation concludes

     Police conducted a territory-wide operation between October 27 and 30 to raise public awareness of safe cycling through stringent enforcement action.

     During the operation, the Police took enforcement action against cycling offences such as failing to comply with traffic signs or signals, cycling on footways for pedestrians and walking on cycle tracks. A total of 22 verbal warnings and 569 summonses were issued.

     According to Police figures, there were 1,394 traffic accidents involving bicycles between January and September this year, resulting in 1,448 casualties with nine fatalities. The number of traffic accidents that occurred on cycle tracks and carriageways were584 and 592 respectively, causing 603 and 618 casualties.

     The Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal and cyclists should comply with Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders committing cycling offences will be prosecuted.
