SHA to visit young entrepreneurs in Shenzhen
********************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, will depart for Shenzhen tomorrow morning (October 26) to visit the youth entrepreneurship bases. Representatives from seven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Hong Kong which are subsidised by the Entrepreneurship Matching Fund (EMF) under the Youth Development Fund (YDF) will join the visit.

Mr Lau will visit the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base in Nanshan and MH Maker. He will meet and exchange views with young people from Hong Kong who have started their businesses in these two bases to learn more about their working situation there. At the same time, the representatives of the seven NGOs from Hong Kong will gain insights into Shenzhen's vibrant atmosphere for innovation and entrepreneurship as well as the opportunities for young Hong Kong entrepreneurs.

The YDF was announced in the 2015 Policy Address and funding was subsequently approved by the Legislative Council in the next year. It currently consists of the EMF and Funding Support for Innovative Youth Development Projects. The EMF assists young people in starting their own business, including setting up new business in Mainland cities, by providing financial support in the form of matching funds for NGOs. Young people aged 18 to 35 can approach the NGOs subsidised by the EMF to apply for their entrepreneurship projects. These NGOs shall simultaneously provide mentorship programmes with relevant guidance and support to young entrepreneurs.

The EMF has approved subsidies to nine NGOs in the first round to implement their entrepreneurship projects. Among them, five have completed the selection of young entrepreneurs, three are vetting the applications and the remaining one has started recruiting young entrepreneurs.

Mr Lau will return to Hong Kong on the same day. During his absence, the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Jack Chan, will be the Acting Secretary for Home Affairs.
