Housing Authority reminds tenants to be alert to fire safety (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

As fire may easily break out in the dry season, a spokesman for the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) today (October 19) reminded tenants residing in public housing estates to be alert to fire safety.

A fire broke out in a flat at Choi Yuen Estate today. Some tenants used a fire hose reel to help control the fire before the arrival of firemen.

The HA attaches great importance to fire safety education for its public housing tenants. In addition to holding fire drills once every two years for every domestic block, the HA regularly shares fire safety tips and information in video broadcasts on the Housing Channel, which is a video network in public rental housing (PRH) estates, as well as on local radio channels and in posters with various fire prevention themes.

Illustrations showing the proper procedures to operate a fire hose reel are also displayed next to every hose reel in PRH estates for tenants' easy reference in case of fire.

"However, when using a fire hose reel, tenants should ensure that there is a safe escape route and leave immediately if the fire gets out of control," the spokesman said.

As part of the HA's fire safety campaign entitled Estate Fire Safety Fun Fair, fire safety messages are conveyed to tenants in a memorable and fun way throughout the year at public housing estates.

The Fire Services Department also helps to spread fire safety messages to PRH tenants by sending its Mobile Publicity Unit and Fire Safety Education Bus to public housing estates, and offering training to tenants who wish to become official Fire Safety Ambassadors and Trainers.
