The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo) (HKETO Tokyo) hosted a Hong Kong Night reception in Busan, Korea, tonight (October 15) to promote Hong Kong and the vibrancy of its film industry.

The reception, which tied in with the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), was attended by some 400 guests from the Hong Kong and overseas film sector.

In her welcome remarks, the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Ms Shirley Yung, said that Hong Kong movies reflect the characteristics of Hong Kong as a vibrant, open and cosmopolitan city.

"Our unique history and development have turned Hong Kong into a meeting point of different cultures and, in turn, an incubator of artistic expressions. Our film industry has been one of the largest and most dynamic in the world. Over the past 10 years, Hong Kong movies and film talents have won more than 300 international awards," she said.

She also noted that the Hong Kong Government attaches great importance to nurturing film talents, and one of the movies featured in the BIFF, "Somewhere Beyond the Mist" by director Cheung King-wai, was a winner of the First Feature Film Initiative, which seeks to identify and nurture prospective film production talents by providing financial support for the winners to make their first commercial feature films.

At the reception, Ms Yung was joined by the Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, Mr Roger Garcia; the Co-Director of the Busan International Film Festival, Ms Kang Soo-youn; and film talents from Hong Kong and overseas.

The Hong Kong Night reception was part of a series of events organised in Korea to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
