The Police will hold a five-day territory-wide public service vehicles road safety enforcement operation starting from tomorrow (October 7) to October 11.

     During the operation, stringent enforcement action will be taken against offences committed by drivers of public service vehicles (including taxis, franchised / non-franchised public buses, public light buses, private light buses and private school buses), including using mobile communication devices while driving, speeding and seatbelt-related offences.

     According to Police figures, there were 4,304 traffic accidents involving public service vehicles from January to August 2017, causing 5,915 casualties and 23 fatalities. This accounted for 42 per cent of the total traffic accidents during the period.   

     The main contributory factors to these accidents were drivers driving inattentively, driving too close to the vehicle in front, careless lane changing, failing to ensure the safety of passengers, and improper or illegal turn, a Police spokesman said.

     The Police reminded public service vehicle drivers not to use any mobile communication devices while driving, and that they should obey road traffic regulations, pay attention to road conditions, wear their seatbelts and remind passengers to wear their seatbelts.
