Lantern carnivals to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival (with photos)

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present a wide range of activities including festive lantern carnivals and lantern displays to celebrate the coming Mid-Autumn Festival. Admission to all activities is free.
 
     A thematic lantern display entitled "Enchanted Blossom under the Moon" will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza from today (September 22) to October 15, featuring festive lantern displays of blossom fairies dancing gracefully in a sea of flowers to celebrate the beauty of the autumn moon.
 
     Three lantern carnivals showcasing a variety of entertainment will be held at Victoria Park on October 4, at Sha Tin Park on October 5 and at Tsing Yi Park on October 6. Details are as follows:
 
1. Urban Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    October 4 (Wednesday), 8pm to 11pm
    Victoria Park
    Programmes: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, a fire dragon dance parade, demonstrations of Guangdong and Hong Kong folk crafts, a marching band performance, music and dance performances, a students' lantern display, a creative market, a wish-making corner and a lantern riddle quiz.
    Lantern display period: September 30 to October 8
 
2. New Territories East Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    October 5 (Thursday), 7.30pm to 10pm
    Sha Tin Park
    Programmes: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, demonstrations of Guangdong and Hong Kong folk crafts, music and dance performances, a magic show, juggling clown performances, traditional snack stalls, game booths, a Chinese chess corner, a tea tasting workshop, a wish-making corner and lantern riddles.
    Lantern display period: September 30 to October 8
 
3. New Territories West Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival
    October 6 (Friday), 7.30pm to 10pm
    Tsing Yi Park
    Programmes: Spectacular Chinese ethnic dances and songs, acrobatics, demonstrations of Guangdong and Hong Kong folk crafts, music and dance performances, a lion dance performance, a bubble show, an African drum performance and workshop, a wish-making corner and lantern riddles.
    Lantern display period: September 30 to October 8
 
     The Jiangsu Arts Troupe, supported by the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Culture, will perform spectacular folk songs, dances and acrobatic shows in the three carnivals. In addition, folk craft demonstrations by Guangdong and local masters, including Chaozhou embroidery, Guangdong inside painting of snuff bottles, birdcage production and Hakka embroidered band knitting craftsmanship, will also be featured.
 
     The carnival sites will each be decorated with beautiful lanterns. The Victoria Park carnival will showcase different festive lanterns, including lantern displays in the shape of women's cheongsams crafted by local masters and organised by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office of the LCSD to show the traditional craftsmanship of lantern making. There will also be lighting installations created by two artists with the themes of "Reunion" and "Moon Hunt", a thematic display entitled "Under the Same Starry Sky" telling stories of acquaintances, and a lantern display by primary and secondary school students.
 
     Following themes of "The Heart of Bustling Hong Kong" and "A Sweet Family under the Moon" respectively, Sha Tin Park and Tsing Yi Park will be decorated with 5-metre-high revolving lanterns together with other dazzling lanterns to add festive joy.
 
     Apart from lantern carnivals, the programme "Youth Night" will be held at the above venues one night after each carnival from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, showcasing the energy and creativity of young people with a variety of programmes.
 
     People are urged not to litter or burn wax while celebrating the festival.
 
     The LCSD's Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival is one of the programmes celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
