Hong Kong Customs combats sale of counterfeit accessories (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs yesterday (September 11) conducted an anti-counterfeiting operation in Causeway Bay and seized a total of 647 items of suspected counterfeit accessories with an estimated market value of about $550,000.

     Customs earlier received information alleging the sale of suspected counterfeit accessories in Causeway Bay. After investigation, Customs officers yesterday seized in a retail shop in the district 647 items of suspected counterfeit accessories, including earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets. A 33-year-old female salesperson was arrested. Investigation is ongoing.

     Customs reminds consumers to procure items at reputable shops and to check with trademark owners or their authorised agents if the authenticity of a product is in doubt.

     Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who sells or possesses for sale any goods with a forged trademark commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
