Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) 2017/18 Season Opening today (September 1):

Maestro (Music Director of the HK Phil, Mr Jaap van Zweden), Chairman Liu (Chairman of Board of Governors of the HK Phil, Mr YS Liu), Mr Slosar (Chairman of Swire Pacific Limited and Principal Patron of the HK Phil, Mr John Slosar), Mr Teixeira (Global Head of Bancassurance and Head of Strategic Development of QBE Insurance, Mr Marcelo Teixeira), Maestro Yu (Principal Guest Conductor of the HK Phil, Mr Yu Long), Mr MaCleod (Chief Executive of the HK Phil, Mr Michael MaCleod), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening. I am most honoured to join you all at the opening concert of the HK Phil for its 2017/18 season.

Recognised as Asia's foremost classical orchestra, the HK Phil has made diversified achievements in terms of concerts held and performances delivered. Every year, the Orchestra presents a spectrum of artistic programmes as well as education and community outreach activities for the public to enhance their appreciation of fine music. These programmes and activities will surely add new momentum to the cultural life of Hong Kong.

Apart from enriching music appreciation in the local community, the Orchestra often stages concerts abroad. The Government spares no effort in lending its support and has funded the HK Phil to tour around the globe in 2017, for example, to a number of cities including Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney, as part of the series in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. During the tour, the Orchestra, with a portfolio of talented musicians and composers, demonstrated to the world the vibrancy, diversity and richness of our culture.

Finally, I wish the HK Phil another rewarding season with remarkable achievements and all of you a memorable audible experience tonight. Thank you.
