SHA supports Hong Kong athletes in Tianjin (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (August 28) continued his trip to Tianjin by visiting the 13th National Games. In the morning, he watched wushu (taolu) and fencing competitions in which Hong Kong athletes participated.

     Mr Lau said that Hong Kong athletes have attained remarkable achievements in many international mega sports events in recent years, fostering the development of sports in Hong Kong and making the city proud. He added that he expects Hong Kong athletes will give their best performance in the Games when they compete with top athletes from various provinces and cities around the country. The Games will also serve as the best opportunity for Hong Kong athletes to prepare for next year's Asian Games, he said.
     
     The 13th National Games, consisting of 33 major sports events, are being held in Tianjin from August 27 to September 8. Comprising 254 athletes and 104 officials and medical staff, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) delegation is taking part in 22 final competitions. This is the sixth time the HKSAR has participated in the National Games since 1997.

     During his stay in Tianjin, Mr Lau has also visited various facilities of the Tianjin Cultural Center and the Tianjin Yangliuqing Wood-block New Year Pictures Museum to explore the furthering of cultural collaboration between Tianjin and Hong Kong.

     Mr Lau will watch the equestrian competition tomorrow (August 29) and leave Tianjin for Hong Kong in the afternoon.
